General Fee Information
Fees are based on the recommended fee schedule set by the College of Psychologists of New Brunswick. Psychological services in private practice are not covered by provincial health insurance plans, but are considered a tax-deductible medical expense. Associated costs, such as meals or travel expenses, may also be deductible if you are travelling a distance for services. You may wish to check with Canada Revenue online or by phone, or ask your accountant to learn more about this. There is no tax/HST on psychological services.
Assessment (in office)
The fee for assessment is $225 per hour. Fees for assessment are determined based on your individualized needs, the referral question, and the amount of time required.
A typical psycho-educational assessment requires fifteen to seventeen hours to complete and is capped at 15 hours.
A typical ADHD assessment requires approximately ten to twelve hours to complete and is capped at 10 hours.
A combined psycho-educational and ADHD assessment is capped at twenty hours.
An Autism assessment will be customized to your needs as autism is often co-occurring with another neurodevelopmental disorder (ex. ADHD), cognitive and/or language impairments, psychiatric conditions (ex. anxiety) and/or learning disabilities. Please call to discuss your needs and fees.
A Social-Emotional assessment helps understand a child or youth’s emotional well-being, behavior, and social skills, especially when they show signs of anxiety, mood changes, anger, or trouble with peers. This will be customized as needed. It is often examined as part of any of the previous assessments. Please call to discuss needs and fees if this is your only concern.
For each of these assessments, only a portion of the allotted time is completed in person. Some of the hours are not face-to-face with the client, but consist of activities such as scoring, interpreting, research, and report writing.
Payments for assessment are due at the end of each session. The final payment (including fees associated with scoring, interpreting, research, and report-writing) is made at the beginning of the feedback session, prior to feedback.
Therapy and Consultation (in office or virtually)
The session fee is $225 per 50-minute hour (the remaining 10 minutes are for taking your payment, setting up your next appointment, & making notes of your session). The first session is typically longer – usually about 1.5 hours. This provides time for you to thoroughly explain your experience and provide relevant information.
Payments for therapy and consultations are made at the close of each session.
Other Fees
Telephone calls lasting less than fifteen minutes are generally not charged. Calls lasting longer than fifteen minutes are charged on a pro-rated basis, at the hourly rate, for every fifteen minutes (that is you will be charged for fifteen, thirty, forty-five or sixty minutes). Other charges may include time to prepare forms, travel, postal, or courier charges. If you are requesting an extra service, please inquire about the fee associated with it.
Methods of Payment
Fees can be paid by cash, e-transfer, debit, or credit card. Receipts are provided at the time that payment is received.
Cancellations
Your appointment is held just for you. We appreciate the courtesy of at least one day’s notice of cancellation for therapy appointments and one week’s notice for cancellation of assessment appointments. This allows us time to offer the appointment to someone else on the wait list.
Insurance Claims Information
We offer direct billing for eligible clients through Blue Cross and Green Shield. If you are covered by an insurance provider registered with Telus eClaims, direct submission may also be possible—please contact us to discuss your specific coverage.
If your plan requires it, clients may need to pay at the time of the session and submit the receipt for reimbursement. Most insurance plans cover a portion of psychological services; however, it is the client’s responsibility to understand the terms and limitations of their coverage.
Please note that claims submission is offered as a courtesy. In the event that a claim is denied for any reason, the client remains responsible for the full payment.
Some questions you may wish to ask your insurance plan provider:
- What psychological services are covered by my plan? Are there any psychological services that have limits to the coverage?
- Is there a daily limit that I am permitted to claim?
- What percentage of the cost does my plan cover?
- How much can I claim each year? Is the limit a number of sessions or a total dollar value?
- Do I require a doctor’s referral?
- Will my plan ask for information from the psychologist – and if so, what information will they ask for?
